چکیده

Variable degree polynomial (VDP) splines have recently proved themselves as a valuable tool in obtaining shape preserving approximations. However, some usual properties which one would expect of a spline space in order to be useful in geometric modeling, do not follow easily from their definition. This includes total positivity (TP) and variation diminishing, but also constructive algorithms based on knot insertion. We consider variable degree polynomial splines of order k > 2 spanned by {1, x, . . . xk−3, (x−xi)mi−1, (xi+1− x)ni−1} on each subinterval [xi, xi+1〉 ⊂ [0, 1], i = 0, 1, . . . l. Most of the paper deals with non-polynomial case mi, ni ∈ [4,∞), and polynomial splines known as VDP–splines are the special case when mi, ni are integers. We describe VDP–splines as being piecewisely spanned by a Canonical Complete Chebyshev system of functions whose measure vector is determined by positive rational functions p(x), q(x). These functions are such that variable degree splines belong piecewisely to the kernel of the differential operator d dxp d dxq dk−2 dxk−2 . Although the space of splines is not based on an Extended Chebyshev system, we argue that total positivity and variation diminishing still holds. Unlike the abstract results, constructive properties, like Marsden identity, recurrences for quasi-Bernstein polynomials and knot insertion algorithms may be more involved and we prove them only for VDP splines of orders 4 and 5.

Geometrically continuous piecewise quasi Chebyshevian splines

Quasi extended Chebyshev spaces (QEC-spaces for short) represent the largest class of spaces of sufficient regularity which are suitable for design [1]. In particular, they contain the well-known extended Chebyshev spaces as a special instance (and therefore can represent transcendental functions) as well as the so called variable degree polynomial spaces [2], that are very effective in handlin...

On Construction of Fourth Order Chebyshev Splines

It is an important fact that general families of Chebyshev and L-splines can be locally represented, i.e. there exists a basis of B-splines which spans the entire space. We develop a special technique to calculate with 4 order Chebyshev splines of minimum deficiency on nonuniform meshes, which leads to a numerically stable algorithm, at least in case one special Hermite interpolant can be const...

Pointwise estimates for 3-monotone approximation

We prove that for a 3-monotone function F ∈ C[−1, 1], one can achieve the pointwise estimates |F(x) − Ψ(x)| ≤ cω3(F, ρn(x)), x ∈ [−1, 1], where ρn(x) := 1 n2 + √ 1−x2 n and c is an absolute constant, both with Ψ , a 3-monotone quadratic spline on the nth Chebyshev partition, and with Ψ , a 3-monotone polynomial of degree ≤ n. The basis for the construction of these splines and polynomials is th...

Best L1 Approximation and Locally Computed L1 Spline Fits of the Heaviside Function and Multiscale Univariate Datasets

Best L1 approximations of the Heaviside function in Chebyshev and weak-Chebyshev spaces has a Gibbs phenomenon. It has been shown in the nineties for the trigonometric polynomial [1] and polygonal line cases [2]. By mean of recent results of characterization of best L1 approximation in Chebyshev and weak-Chebyshev spaces [3] that we recall, this Gibbs phenomenon can also be evidenced in the pol...

Univariate splines: Equivalence of moduli of smoothness and applications

Several results on equivalence of moduli of smoothness of univariate splines are obtained. For example, it is shown that, for any 1 ≤ k ≤ r+1, 0 ≤ m ≤ r − 1, and 1 ≤ p ≤ ∞, the inequality n−νωk−ν(s(ν), n−1)p ∼ ωk(s, n −1)p, 1 ≤ ν ≤ min{k,m + 1}, is satisfied, where s ∈ Cm[−1, 1] is a piecewise polynomial of degree ≤ r on a quasi-uniform (i.e., the ratio of lengths of the largest and the smalles...
